For 130 years Commercial Hotel, beside the Northern Wairoa River, has been welcoming travellers to rest and enjoy its many facilities. This heritage-listed hotel is a beautiful two-storey building with long verandas overlooking a broad sweep of the river and surrounding countryside. Upstairs are ensuite and share-facility rooms, a guest lounge, fireplace and TV. Downstairs is a spacious polished kauri-floored dining room where breakfast is served and evening meals can be arranged. Adjoining this is a smaller dining room with French doors opening onto a sheltered garden. There is a large commercial kitchen available for special occasions. An additional lounge, which used to be the old bar from the tavern days, is now home to a piano, pool table, dartboard, library, TV and fireplace for winter evenings.
Your hosts, Peter and Pam, met while on university holiday jobs in a shearing gang in the South Island. Farm life seemed attractive and 35 enjoyable years were spent raising two sons on a sheep and beef farm in Omamari, northwest of Dargaville. Their love of meeting people and travelling led them to a change of lifestyle with the challenge being to transform Commercial Hotel into what you see today without losing its old-world charm. They thoroughly enjoy their new lifestyle and look forward to welcoming you to “their place” in what is a very special part of the country.Book Now
